What Methods did the United States use in its global struggle against the Soviet Union?
One method that the united states used against the Soviet Union was the development of the hydrogen bomb. Americans discovered that the soviets had an atomic bomb. Not long after this they took over china and Americans now felt more threatened then ever. After this, Truman order {csp_hydrogen-bomb.jpg} red that the hydrogen bomb be created. Many scientists warned that the creation of the bomb could lead to a competition of building weapons, an arms race. The next four decades this was exactly what happened. The United States and the Soviet Union stored nuclear weapons in hope that this mutually assured destruction would keep the other one from attacking with the weapons.

The Eisenhower Doctrine was used in 1958 to put down a revolt against a pro American government in Lebanon. The Doctrine meant that the United States would help any nation threatened by communism. This was another method America used in its global struggle. The CIA was also used by the Eisenhower administration. It was used to help return pro-American governments to Iran and Guatemala.

Brinkmanship is going to the brink of war but not actually going to war. This was another method that helped the United States in their struggle. John Foster Dulles, the Secretary of State, believed that only by going to the brink of war could the United States draw away from communist agression.
In 1953, Nikita Khrushchev became the leader of the Soviet Union. He continued to try to spread communism. Three years later Poland workers rioted against Soviet rule. They won greater control of their government, however when students and workers tried to do the same thing, it failed.

after this. Britain, France and Israel ivaded egypt because of this in 1956. Britain and France used the Suez crisis as an excuse to take over the canal but withdrew because Eisenhower didn't support them.
The last method the United States used was stockpiling weapons. After 1949, the US stockpiled weapons for the next 4 decades. By stockpiling weapons it would bring fear amoung their enemies and give them an advantage.

Another method used was massive retaliation. Massive retaliation is the doctrine that states the best way to deter aggression is to threaten a potential aggressor with devastation by atomic bombs. President Eisenhower emphasized it and he continued to store nuclear weapons.

The House Commitee on Un-American Activites (HUAC) was a group set up that investigated subversive activities throughout American life, including academic insititutions, labor unions, and city halls. In 1947, HUAC, targeted a group called the Hollywood Ten. They were a group of suspected communists living in the U.S.. A blacklist was sent out later to accuse many writers and pruoducers suspected of having communist ties. these people were arrested and their careers ruined. This was a time of fearing communism and became known as the Red Scare.

Above are the pictures of the U.S. spies convicted of helping the Soviet union. Alger Hiss was a spy who was accused of stealing government documents to help the Soviet Union. The Rosenbergs were a married couple of spies who were accused of passing nuclear information to the Soviets. These two trials for the three spies would increase the countries suspicion of communism in the U.S. and create growing concern. Alger Hiss was sent to prison for five years but the Rosenbergs were executed in 1953 over their controversial trial.
Jospeh R. McCarthy, a senator who said he had a list of the communists in the State Depatmant. He never actually had proof of the list but gained supporters. His vicoius style of wreckless charges was called McCarthyism. He went after whoever he thought he could accuse of being a communist. In 1954 McCarthy went after the U.S. military. But after being caught badgering witnesses and twisting the truth on televised events he lost his biggest supporters and began to decline. People no longer supported him or thought he knew any communists but with the ending of the Korean War and his downfall the signaling of the end of the Red Scare was over.
