How did President Truman use the power of the presidency to limit the spread of communism in East Asia?
Jiang Jieshi, also known as Chiang Kaishek, and communist leader Mao Zedong were allies against Japan in WWII. When the war was over they soon became enemies. The United States favored Jiang Jieshi while the Soviet Union favored Mao Zedong. Mao's communists took over china in 1949 and called it the The Peoples Rebublic of China. This lead to more battles over communism.

On June 25th, 1950, the North Koreans attacked the South. The United States of America sent over 300,000 troops led by GeneralDouglas McArthur to help push the North back. General McArthur and his troops attacked the port city of Inchon in September 1950. By October, the South Koreans and the American soldiers had pushed the North back to the 38th parallel.

President Truman was afraid that the Chinese would help the North. He wanted to use Limited War and avoid being in a war with high numbers of soldiers and possibly even atomic weapons. General Douglas MacArthur ensured Truman that he would make sure the Chinese didn't attack, but on November 26th,1950, the Chinese sent 300,000 troops to help aid the North Koreans. President Truman fired General McArthur for disobeying his commands.

This gave the North a slight advantage but the South and the Americans would not give up. The fighting continued untill a stalemate, a tie, was declared. The Americans wanted to end the war as soon as they could so the president, now Dwight D. Eisenhower, hinted toward nuclear warfare.
