What Methods did the United States use in its global struggle against the Soviet Union?

One method that the united states used against the Soviet Union was the development of the hydrogen bomb. Americans discovered that the soviets had an atomic bomb. Not long after this they took over china and Americans now felt more threatened then ever. After this, Truman ordercsp_hydrogen-bomb.jpgred that the hydrogen bomb be created. Many scientists warned that the creation of the bomb could lead to a competition of building weapons, an arms race. The next four decades this was exactly what happened. The United States and the Soviet Union stored nuclear weapons in hope that this mutually assured destruction would keep the other one from attacking with the weapons.

Another method used was massive retaliation. Massive retaliation is the doctrine that states the best way to deter aggression is to threaten a potential aggressor with devastation by atomic bombs. President Eisenhower emphasized it and he continued to store nuclear weapons.

The Eisenhower Doctrine was used in 1958 to put down a revolt against a pro American government in Lebanon. The Doctrine meant that the United States would help any nation threatened by communism. This was another method America used in its global struggle. The CIA was also used by the Eisenhower administration. It was used to help return pro-American governments to Iran and Guatemala.

NASA was another factor that helped. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administaration. After the Soviets launched the satallite Spuntnik 1 the US congress enacted to educate more scientists and created NASA.

Brinkmanship is going to the brink of war but not actually going to war. This was another method that helped the United States in their struggle. John Foster Dulles, the Secretary of State, believed that only by going to the brink of war could the United States draw away from communist agression.
In 1953,
Nikita Khrushchev became the leader of the Soviet Union. He continued to try to spread communism. Three years later Poland workers rioted against Soviet rule. They won greater control of their government, however when students and workers tried to do the same thing, it failed.
Egypt's president, Gamal Abdel Nasser wanted to to build a dam on the Nile River. The United States offered to help but took back their offer when The Soviet Union was also asked to help. Nasser
nationalized the suez canal after this. Britain, France and Israel ivaded egypt because of this in 1956. Britain and France used the Suez crisis as an excuse to take over the canal but withdrew because Eisenhower didn't support them.

The last method the United States used was stockpiling weapons. After 1949, the US stockpiled weapons for the next 4 decades. By stockpiling weapons it would bring fear amoung their enemies and give them an advantage.
